ABOUT US

We Are A Child-Led Inspirational Nursery

Providing Excellent Care & Education Throughout the Years

At Cambridge Day Nursery (CDN), we believe that children are always learning. Their brains are little sponges sucking up everything. Their development is not structured to activities or play, -we are professionals in play, and it is very important that each child is seen as a unique individual. Our staff provide stimulating and exciting opportunities for children to learn through play. Every child has a “Key Person” plus a “Key Buddy.” The Key Person is responsible for creating a learning journey that is shared and communicated with you at home.

Almost all nurseries now use an electric version of a learning journey. However, in our Baby Room, we feel you will want to treasure this time of their life and in respect of this we have kept the traditional method of recording their learning on paper, - not electronically. As your child grows through the nursery, we move on to “Famly” which is our electric management and communication programme.

We have developed are own ethos incorporating many approaches and directions. We have also adapted Free-Access, which is more commonly known as Free flow, allowing children to choose the environment they wish to learn in. This was the first step in CDN finding its place in Early Years. As we are so fortunate to have such as wonderful garden in the centre of Cambridge, the children will often choice to be outside, regardless of the weather.

We have children who are attending now because their parents came to Cambridge Day Nursery as a child themselves!

We Strive To Ensure That Every Child Reaches Their Full Potential

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the world has changed, and it is our mission to support children and families in this new modern world. It is our professional passion to ignite their curiosity and hunger for learning through play, encouraged risk taking and exploration.

We deliver purposeful play that can be extended from a simple comment made by a child or current interest from the child. Children are encouraged to explore the nursery and the resources during the nursery day. Should they be inspired by the play that is occurring in our Toddler Room then they can choice to join them, the same for the garden or their own room. Our experienced educators can assessor when it is appropriate for them to engage in the child’s play or when to sit back and just observe the learning that is taking place. Sometimes we can learn a great deal from listening to their play without an adult engaging.

Over the years we have experienced that children learn far better from real life experiences, by bringing play alive, whether it be simply from a visit from a parent who is sharing their culture with us or visiting the National Space Centre in Leicester. We recognise that families have a huge part in a child’s development. Families matter to us here at Cambridge Day Nursery. We respect that the family makeup changes and progresses over the years and will continue to evolve over the forthcoming years. We wish to work with families in a partnership, sharing the journey of learning and development.

Birth to 5 Matters

What Is A Key Person?

Your child’s Key Person will be your main point of contact. They will guide you through your child’s day and will work with you through such milestones as weaning, toilet training and preparing for the transition to school. A Key Person helps your child to become familiar with the environment and to feel confident and safe within it.

Your child’s Key Person will also work in partnership with other child services and agencies to ensure consistency in care. Each Key Person only works with a small number of children; in this way each child is made to feel safe and cared for, and the child’s Key Person has time to build important relationships with parents. Your child will also have a second Key Person (a Buddy) to ensure that when their main Key Person is away, there is a familiar and trusted person who knows your child well.

The concept of the ‘Key Person’ stems from work done by psychologist John Bowlby in the 1940s that demonstrated the strong attachment babies and young children form for a preferred familiar person and the sense of stability and security this brings.
